Kashmir News Network - Press Releases |

For Immediate
Release Kashmir News Network January 28, 2002 Kashmir News Network Exhorts Vajpayee to Liberate POK Kashmir News Network [KNN] hails Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee’s categorical assertion made today in Raipur: “If Kashmir is the central issue, then one-third of Kashmir is occupied by Pakistan illegally. Therefore, they should return that to India first and then start talks." This contention is in line not only with the Prime Minister’s party’s long-established views on the Kashmir problem but also with a unanimous multi-partisan resolution passed by the Parliament of India in 1994 that unequivocally affirmed: “all of Kashmir, including the region beyond the Line of Control (LoC), now occupied by Pakistan, is an integral part of India.” Liberation of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK) is therefore a constitutional and legal necessity enjoying complete theoretical sanction but pending practical implementation. KNN urges the Prime Minister to move beyond providing lip service at public forums to the cherished aspiration of 1 billion Indians and their representatives, and act in deference to the will of the nation.Pakistan’s policies of dictatorship, repression and underdevelopment of POK also present a rationale for India’s prompt intervention in furtherance of the cause of human rights, secularism and democracy, all of which are enshrined as responsibilities of the state in our constitution. Furthermore, by using POK territory to train and host Al Qaida terrorists for the last several years, Pakistan has endangered the stability of the entire world. It is imperative that India liberates this territory so that it can never again be used for such nefarious aims. The Balawaristan National Front has pleaded for India’s moral, material and diplomatic support to overthrow Pakistani sectarian terrorism and depredations in POK. Prime Minister Vajpayee should promptly issue directions to concerned agencies in the government to extend full-fledged overt and covert assistance to groups fighting Pakistan’s inhumanity in POK. Many POK residents and organizations have also approached him to use his good offices for highlighting the plight of Kashmiris in POK, but the GOI has failed to act decisively on this front. The government should forthwith launch a publicity blitzkrieg, through Doordarshan, All India Radio, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and international media, on the economic and political thralldom of Kashmiris under Pakistani occupation and systematically broach the issue at the United Nations and other international forums. This should be followed by decisive action against Pakistan to liberate POK. There is an argument of 'practicality' held by many Indian policymakers that POK is merely a talking point which should be brought up now and then as a useful PR exercise, but that 'realistically speaking', it is de facto Pakistani territory and nothing can be done about the fait accompli. KNN asks the Prime Minister to make a choice between what is correct in the name of human rights, democracy, secularism and Indian nationhood and what is 'practical' and 'sensible'. Which side is he on? Of dharma, ideals and national interest or of tamas, escapism and inaction? Posterity will judge his prime ministership and eminence unkindly if he merely exudes spiels and does not implement them in actuality. Another fall-out of merely providing lip-service to a sacred cause and then balking from actual action is to add fuel to Pakistan's over-confidence that it can get away with murder and repression and still talk about human rights in Jammu and Kashmir. No solution to the Kashmir tangle can ever materialize unless POK’s status is brought into focus and a campaign for its revocation to India is accomplished. KNN asks Mr. Vajpayee to make a full-stop halt from going down the beaten track of peace summits with Pakistan and take the righteous and only viable solution for peace-POK’s liberation.
