For Immediate
Release Kashmir News Network May 22, 2002 Kashmir News Network Says Pakistan's ISI Killed Lone, Demands Abolition of Agency and Dismantling of Pak Nukes To Avert War The ISI-orchestrated killing of Kashmiri Muslim leader Abdul Ghani Lone yesterday follows a pattern of intimidation and elimination employed by Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir. While Lone was no friend of Kashmiri Hindus and had condoned ethnic cleansing in the past, he maintained moderate views compared to Hurriyat fanatics such as Syed Geelani. Lone had recently hinted that he would participate in the state elections scheduled for early fall this year, and had asked "foreign terrorists" to leave the state. His rebuff of the demand by ISI chief Ehsanul Haq to help scuttle Kashmir polls, at a conference in Dubai a few weeks ago, most definitely sealed his fate. He had started receiving threats after he told Gen. Pervez Musharraf at the failed Agra summit last year that civilians in Kashmir were fed up with violence. Lone's son Sajjad himself pointed the finger at Pakistan and ISI after the killing. The murder is further proof, if any was needed, of Pakistan's determination to keep the flames lit in Jammu and Kashmir despite the danger of nuclear war. The ISI-orchestrated assassination was a perverse attempt by Pakistan to show who is the master in the so-called "freedom struggle". The accelerated violence in the state is a tried and tested Pakistani method to reestablish its hold after moderate Kashmiri Muslim politicians and a section of the Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist group had revolted against the remote control from across the border. It is becoming clearer by the day that the Bush administration's coronation of Pakistan as a "front-line ally" in the "global war against terror" was erroneous, and that complete abolition of the ISI and dismantling of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal is the only way to bring peace back to Jammu and Kashmir and avert nuclear war in South Asia.
