Kashmir News Network - Press Releases |
|
For Immediate
Release Kashmir News Network May 25, 2002 Kashmir News Network Denounces Indian PM Vajpayee for Letting Pakistan off the Hook Indian PM Atal Behari Vajpayee has done it again. 24 hours after telling soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir to prepare for a decisive battle, he reversed his message and talked about "skies clear of war clouds" at a press conference. This is a slap in the face of soldiers, and their families, who have been sitting ducks for Pakistani Al Qaida terrorists. With such irresponsible talk, Vajpayee has demoralized the Indian military at a crucial juncture in the high stakes struggle to end Pakistan's love affair with terrorism. His decision to yet again erase the line in the sand he drew by giving Pakistan "a few more weeks" has had a predictable effect on that rogue nation. Rather than take immediate steps to disband terrorist camps and ask its military to prevent infiltration of Al Qaida terrorists into India, Pakistan has undertaken tests of nuclear-capable missiles. Musharraf appeared to be feeling the heat until the "clear skies" statement, after which he has reversed his tone. By not carrying out its threat to destroy Pakistani terrorist camps, India has given Pakistan time to fully deploy nuclear missiles. Vajpayee's offer of Rs. 6000 crore (about $1.2 billion) package to Jammu and Kashmir is further evidence of his lack of understanding of the situation in the state. India has pumped more money into that state than most others in the last five decades. Financial aid is not going to resolve the issues in a state which is afflicted with Islamic fundamentalism, just as US pumping of billions into Pakistan has not weaned it away from sponsoring terrorism. If Vajpayee truly wants to lead Jammu and Kashmir away from Talibanization and violence, he needs to fulfill his election promises of abrogating Article 370, resulting in full integration with the secular democratic framework of India and the return of 350,000 Kashmiri Hindus, who were ethnically cleansed in 1990 and are currently living like refugees in their own country, back to their homeland.
