India, US should coordinate attack against Pakistan, Afghanistan
One day before the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington, Pakistani Islamic terrorist groups that have been targeting Jammu and Kashmir state of India had promised to launch large-scale attacks on India, including those on political figures. Coincidence? No, these groups share logistics, planning and training facilities, as well as fundamentalist fervor, with Bin Laden’s Al Qaida network. In fact most of the trainees killed in the 1998 US missile strikes against Al Qaida terrorist camps belonged to Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba and Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, both on the UK’s list of international terrorist groups.

These groups have killed tens of thousands of men, women and children for 12 years in Jammu and Kashmir, driven out over 350,000 Hindus from Kashmir valley, and turned the state into a Taliban-like medieval morass. Women can not be seen without veils, cinema halls and cable TV are banned, and these groups target remaining non-Muslims as well as Muslim opponents of fundamentalism. Pakistani terrorist groups have targeted other areas of India, and attacked Delhi’s historic Red Fort a year ago. An Indian Airlines jet was hijacked nearly two years ago to force the release of top Pakistani terrorists.

Pakistan goes beyond providing safe haven for these dangerous groups. It provides military and logistics support, facilitating their infiltration into India. Pakistan’s veiled nuclear threats have ostensibly convinced India not to attack terrorist training facilities inside Pakistani territory. As has happened in the past, the US is likely to turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to Pakistan’s leading role in international terrorism and strike only against Afghan bases of Bin Laden, thus leaving most of the terrorist infrastructure intact.

India should use this opportunity to launch surgical strikes against the dozens of terrorist bases in Pakistan. This should be done in coordination with US and NATO. Such a move will inevitably lead to broad conflict, however it is necessary to preempt what is certain to be an escalating covert war by Pakistan against India.
