Kashmir News Network - Press Releases |

For Immediate
Release Kashmir News Network December 27, 2001 Kashmir News Network Terms US Action Against Pakistani Terror Groups "Too Little Too Late" Kashmir News Network (KNN) welcomes the addition of Pakistani terrorist groups, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, to the US State Department’s list of designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations. However, Kashmir News Network (KNN) considers this to be a case of "too little, too late" action undertaken by the Bush administration. India has been advising the US for years to take this step in light of numerous deadly attacks on Indian civilians and security personnel by these two Al Qaida-related groups. It is unfortunate that this action was not undertaken until India's willingness to use force became apparent. Pakistan’s denial of its role in the operations of Lashkar and Jaish is as implausible as the denials by these groups of their involvement in terrorism in India. US newspapers, including the New York Times, LA Times and the Washington Post have termed Pakistan’s denials as "nonsense" in the aftermath of the December 13 attack on India’s Parliament building. Top US officials, while designating these two terrorist groups this week, went to great pains to cover up Pakistan’s official involvement. President Bush, on the same day that top US newspapers implicated official Pakistan, declared the Lashkar-e-Taiba a "stateless sponsor of terrorism". Subsequent US statements appear to suggest that India and Pakistan are both targeted by these terrorist groups, ignoring the reality that both have been created and operated by Pakistan as part of its proxy war on India. Terrorist leaders such as Hafiz Mohammed Sayeed and Maulana Masood Azhar have for long operated freely in Pakistan, threatened both India and the US, and have sent thousands of supporters to fight against the US campaign in Afghanistan. This fence sitting in South Asia by the United States has hurt it dearly during the past decade, when it turned a nelson’s eye to Pakistan’s sponsorship of the Taliban as well as its collaboration with the Al Qaida. In many ways, the lessons learnt on September 11 have already been forgotten. Pakistan continues to support terrorism in India and covertly keep the remnants of the Taliban and Al Qaida alive. KNN calls upon the United States to recognize the threat that Pakistan poses to democracy and security in South Asia and the rest of the world. We demand that the United States put the full force of its military might behind India in neutralizing Pakistan’s military-intelligence complex that sponsors terrorism, and dismantling its nuclear arsenal, which has been used to blackmail India for the past decade.
